Unruly Mane

Unruly Mane

Description

Unruly Mane is my zine that contains anecdotal stories of my personal experience with being a mixed-race female and my rocky relationship with my hair. Hair has always been a topic of tension for me, and many others with hair texture like mine or coarser. Hair is something that we wear and use to express ourselves, our values, and our culture— whether we are aware of it or not. In Unruly Mane, hair becomes the vehicle to discuss and express my thoughts surrounding self-esteem, identity, and race. Inside, there are over 15 of my illustrations and short stories.

Unruly Mane seeks to empower individuals to rock their hair in whatever way they decide and to challenge the perception that hair must conform to a certain way that society deems appropriate. Society doesn’t realize how much pressure they put on us to fit a certain mold; it's not realistic, it's not fair, and it's not what I want to do. So, I encourage you to shed the weight of your hair from your shoulders and become unruly.
